OUr history

Shady Grove Baptist Church, Gum Spring, Virginia, was organized in 1871 A.D., not on these grounds, but approximately one mile northeast of this site on a place known as the Old Duke Farm. There was no church building initially, instead, the members worshipped in a brush arbor. It was through the generous gift that the current piece of land was granted. On this plot, two structures were erected, including our present building which was completed in 1976. The first pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church was Rev. Daniel Fleming. several members came from the William Meeting House and South Anna Baptist Church. Other pastors of Shady Grove Baptist Church were Rev. Patrick Clay, Rev. Ned Payne, Rev. Primus Williams, Rev. Tom Edwards, Rev. C.W. Beckley, Rev. Christee, Rev. S.R. Harris, Rev. Thomas Green, Rev. W.L. Morris, Rev. M.T. Fleming, Dr. George Murray Thompson, Sr., Dr. Thomas S. Simmons, and Rev. Marcus Brown (Dr. G.G. Campbell served as interim pastor and Rev. Dr. Reginald T. Cleveland. Our current Ministerial Staff consist of Rev. Cleveland R. Mallory Sr., Rev. Juanita Mickens, and Rev. Tasha King who serves as the youth minister. Through faith, prayer, love, and teaching, Shady Grove Baptist Church continues to work for the betterment of the Christian community. With God on our side, we will continue striving for higher heights in service for our Master above.
